William D. "Bill" Whyde, 87, of Castalia, died Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, after a sudden illness.

He was born October 12, 1930, in Newcomerstown, Ohio, and moved to Sunny Meade for work after graduating from Newcomerstown High School in 1949. Sunny Meade is where he met his wife, Cora "Evelyn" Whyde, who preceded him in death in 2008. They were married for 57 years.

Bill was a hard worker and a provider. He retired from General Motors in Sandusky in 1993 after more than 40 years, and at times he also worked as a bricklayer. He was always ready to help his family with any need. For Bill, family came first.

His favorite hobby was fishing, and many summers were spent on Lake Erie with friends and his sons and son-in-law. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, and he never missed a ball game, swim meet or track meet.

Bill is survived by three sons, Richard (Vesta) Whyde of Sandusky, Darrell Whyde and Randy Whyde, both of Castalia; one daughter, Diane (Kevin) Howard of Castalia; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Paul (Staci) Howard of Sandusky, Magen (Genti) Howard of Dublin, Brandon (Jennifer) Whyde of Norwalk, Brett (Danielle) Whyde and daughter Brynlee of Sandusky, Andra Clark of Sandusky, and D.J. Whyde of Sandusky; two brothers, Ronald "Gene" (Betty) of Newcomerstown and George (Marcia) of Jamestown; and three sisters, Barbara (James) Storck of Newcomerstown, Donna Colton of Newcomerstown, and Patricia (Hube) Keylor of Columbiana.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Ann Whyde, in infancy; his parents, George and Twila Whyde; and one sister, June Hill.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2018, and from 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018, until time of funeral service at 12 noon in Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. The Rev. Kathleen Suggitt will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
