William A. Bechstein, age 68, of Castalia, died Wednesday morning, July 24, 2019, in his residence, following a brief illness.

He was born February 6, 1951, in Sandusky, and grew up in Bay View.  William graduated from Margaretta High School in 1969, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.  He was a firefighter for over 25 years; starting his career at Margaretta Township Fire Dept, then continued on to Perkins Township Fire Dept; where he became Captain.  William finished his career as the Fire Chief of Berlin Township Fire Dept. in Delaware, OH, for 10 years.   He loved to spend time with his family and granddaughter, and loved to go fishing.

He is survived by his wife Mary (Henry) Bechstein; daughter Kathryn Bechstein, Castalia; son Zach Bechstein, Sandusky; granddaughter Ellie; sister Penny Zoliniak, Huron; brother Terry (June) Bechstein; Huron; and several nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Mary (Nemitz) Bechstein.

At the request of William, he donated his body to the OSU College of Medicine.  Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, Castalia, is in charge of the arrangements.
