Roland A. Windau, age 95, of Castalia, died peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning, July 14, 2016.
He was born January 13, 1921, in Sandusky and graduated from St. Mary's Central Catholic in 1939. He also attended The Ohio State University. One of his greatest enjoyments was watching the area youth baseball games played on David Windau Memorial Field, located on the family farm.
Roland was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; where he served on the Pastoral Council, was involved in the Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister and was in the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Sandusky Cooperative Milk Producers Association, where he served as secretary; Knights of Columbus; Farm Bureau; Oxford Grange; and the Erie County Ag Society. Roland was also the past president and treasurer of the Erie County Fair Board, and served on the Erie Regional Planning Committee. He was a charter member of the Margaretta Township Zoning Board, served two terms as a Margaretta Township Trustee, and was a member of the Ohio Trustees Association.
He is survived by four daughters Martha (Bob) Moser, Kathryn Bollini, Barbara (Greg) Siesel all of Castalia, and Susan (Gregg) Moore of Willard; son Gary Windau of Castalia; foster daughter in-law Kathleen Sharp of Clyde; 20 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brother Albert Windau; sister Lois Moll; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roland was preceded in death by wife Margaret (Novotny) Windau in 2010; son David A. Windau, 1979; son in-law Raymond Bollini, 2007; foster son Gene Sharp, 2015; sisters Rita Windau; sister and brother in-law Jean (Windau) and Robert Kramer; sister in-law Audrey Windau; brother in-law Karl Moll; brother and sister in-laws Donald (Ann) Trinter, William (Emily) Shirkey, and Emil (Dorothy) Novotny.
Friends may call from 4-8 PM Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Ransom Funeral and Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, where Rosary Prayers will be recited at 8:00 PM. Closing prayers will be Monday, July 18, 2016, at 9:15 AM in Ransom Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky. The Rev. Joe Steinbauer will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky; St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky; or to the Castalia Recreation Association PO Box 595, Castalia, OH 44824.
